Small Hotels of St. Eustatius

Also known as 'Statia' - Netherlands Antilles

Statia is one of the most undeveloped islands of the Caribbean - but it may not stay that was for long. A recent agreement to break up the Netherlands Antilles and make St. Eustatius a part of Holland has created interest in the island as a retirement destination for Dutch citizens who are attracted by the low-scale development, relaxed lifestyle, tropical climate, reasonable real estate prices and the security of being in the 'new Dutch Caribbean'.

Don't expect high levels of service here - you just won't find it.  However, if you want to see 'the Caribbean as it used to be' with a very relaxed lifestyle, lots of history, an island you can walk across in 20 minutes and easy access from St. Maarten - Statia may be a great choice for a visit.  Make sure you explore the old fort, the sunken warehouse district and 'The Quill' - on of the most unique volcano/rainforests in the Caribbean.

Forget the traditional hotels in the lower town unless you're there for diving - they are overpriced and don't come close to the international standards that they advertise.  Instead, explore some of the small family-operated inns 'above the town'. You'll find great value, friendly but limited service and since the island is small - they're not far from anything.
